Originally trained as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, I continue to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in my practice. In addition to CBT, I’m formally trained in Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) treatment modalities. The ability to administer different treatment approaches based on individual needs gives me the skills to work with many different presenting problems – from ineffective communication and performance anxiety to mood concerns and trauma recovery.
My solutions-driven approach incorporates clinical knowledge and mutual trust to connect a client with their own self-awareness, their family and their social and work communities. Relationship therapy is most successful as a collaborative process using family participation. I work with individuals, families, teens and couples to create new connections and solutions.
I believe it’s crucial to provide a solid support base for each client during the therapy process. With the Flick Connection, reinforcing this bond extends beyond the office to include phone and text availability and teletherapy. In over ten years of working with teens and adults under 50, I’ve seen how tech-savvy clients in these age ranges progress faster when they have increased access to therapist availability. That’s one of the reasons I use the word “Connection” to describe my technique.
Connections are the building blocks of positive change, and my first goal is to develop a connection with each client. For a client to feel secure in a therapeutic relationship, I believe a therapist should be available outside the 9:00 to 5:00 schedule. That’s why I make myself available frequently to support clients after-hours when difficult times arise.
“You deserve to know I’ll be there for you.” – Tom Flick, MA, LMFT
